Week 4 - God's Existence
How to Prove God's Existence
Whether God is real is a question that matters deeply, especially when sharing the gospel.
Just as a building requires a builder, the universe points to a Creator who is eternal and beyond space and time. Something cannot come from nothing, and the order, beauty, and complexity of the universe and human life point to God’s existence.
Our shared sense of morality also reveals God’s design. We all recognize that actions like murder, lying, and stealing are wrong. Yet we all fail to live up to this moral standard countless times, and can never attain the righteous requirement demanded of us. What does this mean for us? Put simply, it means that we are a sinner, deserving of His judgement and wrath.
However, this is not the end, as there is good news. This good news claims that Jesus Christ died on the cross, taking on the judgement that we justly deserve, defeating death to bring us life. In place of His righteous judgement, He offers us His forgiveness and eternal life if we only just believe, surrender, and follow Him in repentance and grace.
Can we prove God’s existence with 100% certainty? No.
However, is there more than enough evidence to back it up? Absolutely.
When calculated, researchers have found that the probability for the universe to exist as it is now by sheer chance and accident is 10^120, which is a number that has 120 zeros in it.
To give you an idea of the sheer magnitude of this, we can take a look at the numbers of atoms in the observable universe, which is roughly 10^80. Imagine that every single atom in the universe is shoved into a massive pool with an additional 10^40 atoms added to that (this would mean that the pool itself would be 1.5 times larger than the universe). Imagine one of those atoms is marked, and you are tasked to find it and pick it up. However, you are blindfolded and are forced to simply reach down and grab one atom at random in hopes that it’s the one. This is statistically impossible, and so is the likelihood of the universe existing by sheer random chance.
I choose to believe in God.
Read these Bible passages:
Hebrews 3:4
Psalm 19:1
Acts 14:14-17
Acts 17:22-28
Colossians 1:16-17
Romans 1:19-20
Questions:
Why does our shared moral standard prove God’s existence?
What scientific evidence might demonstrate that God exists?
Why can it sometimes be beneficial to use evidence to defend God’s existence?
What are the dangers of only relying on evidence?
Why is it important for you to know and to read the Bible?
Not everyone will accept the evidence you bring to the table. How can you still share the Good News of Christ with them?
